Checklist Tasks

• Shut off power or gas before inspection to prevent shock or gas leaks.
• Place a bucket under the drain valve; open briefly to check for cloudy water.
• Listen for changes in noise when heating to pinpoint sediment or trapped air.
• Lower temperature setting to 120°F to slow mineral buildup and reduce noise.
• Inspect the anode rod for corrosion which can worsen tank noise.
• Flush two gallons from the tank to remove sediment without fully draining.
• Check for leaks or rust at the base for signs of corrosion from sediment.
• Inspect incoming cold-water pipe for a heat trap nipple to reduce noise.
• Tap the tank with a mallet to detect hollow areas caused by scaling.
• Inspect the pressure relief valve for mineral buildup or sticking.
• Monitor burner flame for yellow tipping linked to sediment on the burner.
• Record noise timing and frequency to associate with use or heating.
